In second grade we start out the year reviewing skills and concepts previously learned in first grade. Second graders learn many new songs and skills including reading musical notation for word rhythm and proper terminology for dynamics and tempo. Melodic register and direction are explored with some basic notation experiences. The children will have experiences reading actual rhythmic notation for quarter, paired eighth, half notes and quarter rests in patterns and songs
About halfway through the year, we begin to prepare for and perform in a concert on the stage. This concert will be performed in May.
After the concert performance, second graders will begin to play Orff instruments with proper technique and skill. These instruments include pitched percussion such as xylophones and metallophones. They lend themselves beautifully to exploring the concepts of steady beat, rhythm, tempo, dynamics and form. This is always quite exciting because the children see these instruments in the music room for two or three years before they finally have the chance to play them!
